Decades later, its name has been borrowed by an entirely different endeavour: the Stargate AI Project, a venture that eschews the mystical for the empirical, relying on artificial intelligence to solve modern intelligence problems. Together, these two Stargates form a fascinating arc of how the practice of espionage has evolved, from the speculative fringes of the human psyche to the precision of data-driven algorithms.

The StarGate Project: An Experiment in Human Potential

The StarGate Project was initiated in 1977 under the auspices of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and SRI International. Operating under various code names, including Gondola Wish, Grill Flame, and Scanate, the program ultimately unified as “StarGate” in 1991. Its objective was to leverage remote viewing – the supposed ability to perceive distant or hidden objects without physical interaction – for intelligence and reconnaissance. The program relied on human participants, many of whom claimed to possess innate psychic abilities. Tasks involved viewing concealed objects, locating hostages, or identifying enemy installations. Although the concept was intriguing, its results were inconsistent at best. By 1995, after years of scepticism from the scientific community, the CIA pulled the plug. StarGate had failed to produce reliable, actionable intelligence, and the dream of psychic spies quietly faded into history.
